Our next assignment was finding a motion story behind some still masterpiece. I chose a famous work by Josef Müller Brockmann, his poster for Musica Viva. I admire his simplistic and rule-based grid approach to typography and wanted to make a little tribute to his great work.
I had two basic concepts of how to put that poster into motion. First, more abstract, would be using squares as a visual translation of the names appearing on the poster. Second, more story-telling and funny, would give a little tribute to old video games and interpret squares in the poster as particles from a Russian Tetris game. After a group discussion I decided to use the Tetris idea. Bellow you can find my very initial sketches in a form of a storyboard.
Project 2 - Rudnik (UPDATE - VIDEO ADDED)
Our task was to visually interpret a music composition Kolaż. I got the first part (1,15" long) and I firstly analyzed how many kinds of sounds could be identified in the composition and the put into several groups to make a system out of them. Then I assigned a letter to each group (B for brass, V for voice etc.) and thought about a typographic approach to the motion design for this piece. My intention was to play with the moves of individual letters and also to use big junks of letters in a form of particles behaving differently almost every time to get a right tension of the animation. Bellow you can find a few screenshots and my notes. Video is located at my Vimeo account at this URL: http://vimeo.com/12624243
Project 1 - 4,33"
The first task was to try to visualize sounds in our surroundings during four minutes and thirty three seconds. I got an inspiration from the information design and way-finding systems and set sounds into several categories. Each category then was assigned a different symbol and using a storyboard fields I set volume of the sound to the size of the symbol. Panning was symbolized by a place of the sound in a field (more left or right) and the timeline was going from the top to the bottom. Some particular sounds could be found. For example my interview with a colleague is made using two triangles (mine in the center and his on the right side) or ambient sound of rain outside getting its power etc.
Here are my initial notes and kind of a storyboard I made afterwards.
